Dr Tony Sagar joined the Shirley Institute in Manchester, UK in 1978 after graduating from St. Andrews University with a PhD in Synthetic Organic Chemistry, sponsored by ICI Fibres. There was a family history of connections with The Shirley Institute, with both his mother and father working for the company at various times. His father joined Shirley as a result of the merger of the British Cotton Industry Research Association with the British Rayon Research Association in 1961, which was a return home after having worked there earlier in his career. He rose to be head of the Technical Services department and later Technical Director.

On 14 January 2016, European legislation on nonylphenol ethoxylates was published in the Official Journal for the European Union with the Commission Regulation (EU) 2016/26 from 13 January 2016. Based on this, an additional entry (46a) will be inserted into appendix XVII of Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 (REACh).
Shirley® have recently completed the upgrade of our weathering and irradiance degradation exposure facilities at the Manchester laboratory.
Our new regional office in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, opened on 4th January this year.

It is with great pleasure that Shirley® announce the appointment of Ian Riley as Quality Manager (Designate) for BTTG Ltd. Ian's role will encompass the complete quality functions across the various sites of BTTG Ltd, including the Shirley® laboratories at Trafford Park. Ian has a long history in quality management, primarily in the medical device industry, including ensuring the development and compliance of production facilities and departments with ISO13485, CAMDCAS and FDA Regulations. Ian's role within BTTG Ltd will be to ensure the ongoing compliance of our Quality Management System(s) to the stringent requirements of ISO17025, ISO17021, EN45011 and such other systems as required by our extensive customer base.
It is with great pleasure that Shirley® announce the appointment of Gareth Heywood as Operational Head for our world renowned chemical testing and analysis laboratories in Trafford Park, Manchester. A graduate of the University of Manchester Gareth has been with Shirley® in the position of Senior Analyst since 2004 and takes up his post immediately, succeeding Nazia Ahmed.
